For complete beginners, our goal is to get you standing up and riding broken (white‑water) waves in waist‑deep water during your very first lesson. We’ll also give you a solid introduction to basic techniques, ocean awareness, and essential surf/beach safety at a novice level.
Everyone progresses differently, and factors like fitness, flexibility, age, and transferable skills can influence how quickly you pick things up.
As a general guide, we recommend 3 lessons (6 hours) as a great foundation. After this, most people feel confident enough to start practising independently in waist–chest deep white‑water, continuing to build skills at their own pace.
During summer, on average, our daily lesson timeslots are around 10am and 2pm respectively; however, lesson start/finish times are predetermined by us according to the best state of tide on any given day. Official lesson timings are available on our booking platform and will be determined by your chosen dates.
The minimum age for joining one of our surf lessons is 7 years old. This ensures that all participants have the physical ability, confidence, and attention span needed to learn safely in the water.
We also offer family and private lesson options, which can be a great fit for younger children or mixed‑age groups who want a more tailored experience.
Not particularly. At the introductory level, we teach in waist‑deep water, and you’ll have the support of a highly buoyant surfboard throughout the lesson. That said, we do expect a basic level of water confidence, as the occasional wipe‑out and dunking is all part of learning to surf.
We couldn’t be easier to find! During the summer months, we’re based directly on Perranporth Beach — you can’t get any closer to the waves without getting wet. You’ll find us right next to Alcatraz Café and Surf Hire, just below The Summerhouse Restaurant. If you walk onto the beach from the promenade, you’ll stroll straight past our setup (and you’ll usually spot our gazebo and flags from the beach car park).

Spring Tide Location
During spring tides (New/Full Moon), the higher water levels mean we can’t stay in our usual spot. On these days, we relocate over the little bridge near Alcatraz, then a short walk to the right toward The Watering Hole beach bar.

Winter Location (Oct–May)
In the winter months, we move off the sand and operate from Piran Surf on Perranporth High Street.
Yes — we run lessons in most weather conditions, as long as the sea state is considered safe and suitable for novice surfers and appropriate for the group’s age and ability.
If we expect conditions to be unsafe or unsuitable on a particular day, we’ll always do our best to contact you in advance to reschedule your lesson to another available day or time.
If you’re flexible, we’re also happy to offer advice on the best conditions within a 3–5 day forecast so you can make the most of your time in the water.
If a lesson has to be interrupted or cut short (for example, due to a red flag for mist or fog), we’ll arrange to complete the remaining time at another suitable slot wherever possible. If rescheduling isn’t an option, we’ll organise a credit or refund proportional to the amount of lesson time lost.
For full details, you’re welcome to check our Terms & Conditions.
Should a lesson be interrupted and cut short (e.g. red flag due to mist/fog), We will make an arrangement to either complete the session at another time, where possible, or a credit/refund will be organised in proportion to the amount of time lost in the lesson. Feel free to take a look at our full terms and conditions.(https://www.perranporthsurfschool.co.uk/terms-conditions)
Yes — all the essential equipment you need for your lesson is provided free of charge. During the summer months, we don’t supply boots or gloves, as the water is warm enough without them.
For children under 12, we do recommend wearing soft‑rubber or neoprene rock‑pooling shoes/boots (widely available in local shops). These offer extra protection against weever fish, which can occasionally be found in the shallows
Yes — you’re welcome to use your own equipment, as long as it’s suitable for the conditions on the day.
We generally recommend wearing a full‑length wetsuit for comfort and warmth during our 2‑hour lessons, especially for children.
If you’d like to use your own hard surfboard, we may ask you to start the session on one of our softboards so we can safely assess your ability first. After that, you’re free to switch to your own board.
You’ll only need to bring a towel and some slim‑fitting or Lycra swimwear to wear underneath your wetsuit. You might also want to bring a drink or a small snack for after your lesson.
If you fancy something more substantial, there are plenty of food and drink options both on the beach and in Perranporth town — all just a short walk from our base.
We can often accommodate lessons on a walk‑in basis, especially outside the busiest weeks. However, during the peak summer period (July and August), we strongly recommend booking at least 24 hours in advance. This is particularly important for families, groups, or private lessons who need a specific day or time, as sessions do fill up quickly.
You can always check live availability and secure your preferred slot through our online booking platform.
All our surf lessons are a full 2 hours of practical time in the water. Changing into wetsuits and the pre‑/post‑lesson briefings are not counted as part of your lesson duration.
To keep everything relaxed and stress‑free, please allow around 3 hours in total from arrival to departure.
Yes — the main beach promenade car park overlooks our summer location and provides the most direct access to the beach. There are also several other car parks around Perranporth, all just a few minutes’ walk from us or the beach.
Yes — we’ll look after your belongings while you’re in the water. You’ll be given a large storage box to keep your items secure and dry throughout your lesson.
Yes — hot showers are available in the ablutions block on the beach promenade, less than 100m from our base. These operate on a paid, timed system, just so you’re aware.
There are also free public beach showers available at The Watering Hole bar on the sand.
If you have any medical conditions, previous injuries, or anything that may affect your participation, please let us know when booking and again on arrival. Most conditions don’t prevent you from taking part, but it helps us tailor the session and keep you safe. If you’re unsure whether surfing is suitable for you, we’re always happy to offer guidance
Yes — spectators are very welcome. You can watch from the beach, promenade, or nearby cafés. We just ask that you stay clear of the lesson area so our instructors can keep everyone safe.
Yes — we offer private one‑to‑one lessons, private family sessions, and private small‑group lessons. These are ideal if you prefer personalised coaching, want to progress quickly, or simply want a session tailored to your group.
Yes — we operate year‑round. From October to May, we run lessons from our winter base at Piran Surf on Perranporth High Street. Lesson availability varies depending on instructor availability, weather, and sea conditions.
Our group lessons typically run with small, manageable group sizes to ensure plenty of individual attention. Instructor‑to‑student ratios follow industry best practice and may vary slightly depending on age groups and conditions, but we always prioritise safety and quality coaching.
That’s completely normal — many beginners feel the same. Our instructors are experienced in working with nervous or first‑time surfers, and we teach in waist‑deep water where you can always stand. We’ll progress at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
Dogs are welcome on Perranporth Beach for much of the year, but seasonal short-lead restrictions apply (Jul/Aug). You’re welcome to bring your dog along, but please ensure someone is available to look after them during your lesson, as we cannot supervise pets.
During summer, we operate directly on the beach, so changing is done at our base using our portable changing area. In winter, changing facilities are available at Piran Surf. Public toilets and showers are also close by.
Yes — public toilets are located on the beach promenade, just a short walk from our summer base. Additional facilities are available in town during the winter months.
If you’re running late, please let us know as soon as possible. We’ll do our best to accommodate you, but lessons must start on time for safety reasons. Late arrivals may miss part of the session, and we can’t guarantee extensions.
Yes — we offer a range of discounts for families, groups, and multi‑lesson bookings. These vary seasonally, so feel free to check our booking platform or contact us for current offers
Absolutely. Many people choose to book a course of lessons to maximise their progression. You can book multiple sessions directly through our online booking platform or contact us for help arranging a tailored package.
If the waves are too small for a productive lesson, we’ll contact you to reschedule to a better time or day. We always aim to run lessons in conditions that allow you to learn safely and enjoyably.
We occasionally take photos or short video clips during lessons when conditions and staffing allow. If we capture any great moments, we’ll let you know how to view or purchase them. Feel free to ask your instructor on the day.
We provide secure storage boxes for your belongings, including phones, wallets, and car keys. Everything stays dry and safe while you’re in the water.
Group lessons may include a mix of ages and abilities, but we always structure sessions so everyone receives appropriate coaching. If you prefer a session tailored specifically to your age group or ability level, a private lesson may be the best option.
We aim to make surfing as accessible as possible. If you or someone in your group has additional needs, please contact us in advance so we can discuss options and tailor the session accordingly.
Contact lenses are usually fine. Glasses can be worn with a secure strap, but may get lost in the water.
