Lesson Times

During the summer months (May–Sept), we offer two daily 2-hour lessons and our primary times are 10am and 2pm. However, start and finish times may adjust to align with the most favourable tide conditions each day. Official lesson schedules are set in advance and will be confirmed at the time of booking, whether made online or by phone.

Please check in 20 minutes before your lesson begins to allow ample time for preparation. Changing into wetsuits and pre/post-lesson briefings are not included in your practical lesson time. To ensure a smooth experience, plan for a total of three hours between arrival and departure.

Equipment

We provide all necessary equipment for your lessons at no extra cost. For beginners—or whenever we deem it beneficial—we use high-quality soft foam surfboards to prioritise safety and maximise learning success. Our extensive range of wetsuits accommodates all sizes and body shapes, ensuring surfers stay warm and comfortable throughout their session. Additionally, we offer a selection of progressive surfboards in various dimensions to support developing improvers and intermediate surfers.

  • I have never surfed before... How many lessons would I need to get me going?
Our aim is to get you standing up and surfing in (broken) white-water waves (waist depth), within your first lesson and to provide you with sufficient understanding of basic techniques and surf/beach safety, at a novice level. However, the rate of progression is highy dependent on the individual's own physical fitness, flexibility, age and transferrable skills. On average, we would recommend 3 lessons (6hrs) as a good foundation for beginning to practice learning to surf at your own leisure, within waist-chest deep water.
  • What times are the lessons run?
During summer, on average, our daily lesson timeslots are around 10am and 2pm respectively; however, lesson start/finish times are predetermined by us according to the best state of tide on any given day. Official lesson timings are available on our booking platform and will be determined by your chosen dates.
  • What is the minimum age for taking part in a surf lesson?
For our open-group lessons, children from 7yrs+ are welcome to join, as long as they are sufficiently water-confident to do so. We can take children from 6yrs old within a private lesson scenario.
  • Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
Not particularly, as we will be surfing in waist depth water (with a highly buoyant surfboard) at the introductory level; however, we would expect at least a basic level of water confidence, as there will be the odd/frequent dunking with a wipe-out.
  • Where do we find you?
We couldn't be easier to find! We are based directly on the beach throughout summer, so you couldn't get any closer to the waves without getting wet! We are based adjacent to Alcatraz Café and Surf Hire shop, just below The Summerhouse Restaurant. If you access the beach from the promenade, you will walk straight past us, if you haven't already spotted our gazebo and flags from the beach carpark. Our primary location on What3Words: ///cornfield.swimmer.wipes During spring tides (New/Full Moon), we have to locate ourselves over the little bridge near Alcatraz and to the right, towards The Watering Hole beach bar, as the high tides prevent us from being in our usual position. Our approximate location on What3words at theses times is: ///forest.frown.tickles During the winter months (Oct-May), we are based at Piran Surf shop, on Perranporth's high street.
  • Are lessons still held in bad weather?
Yes, as long as conditions are considered safe and 'tolerable' for novice surfers and/or the group demographics. If we expect conditions to be unsuitable to run on any given day, we will endeavour to contact you, prior to your lesson, to reschedule for another day/time, wherever possible. We are always happy to offer advice for getting the optimum surfing conditions, within a 3-5 day forecast, if you don't mind being flexible with your days/times for lessons.
  • What happens if lessons are cancelled?
As is the nature of surfing, we are at the mercy of Mother Nature and, therefore, we occasionally have to cancel lessons when conditions are either beyond our/your level of tolerance for safety, or it's simply too flat (no sufficient wave energy to propel a surfboard). We have stringent 'Big Sea and Flat Sea' policies determining our ability to run surf lessons, based primarily on meteorological conditions. We always try to pre-empt such conditions and will do our best to give our customers advance notice and an opportunity to find an alternative day/time. If we cannot arrange for any alternative sessions then a full refund will be given. Should a lesson be interrupted and cut short (e.g. red flag due to mist/fog), We will make an arrangement to either complete the session at another time, where possible, or a credit/refund will be organised in proportion to the amount of time lost in the lesson. Feel free to take a look at our full terms and conditions at the bottom of the page.
  • Do you provide the equipment?
Yes, all necessary equipment is provided, free of charge. We do not offer boots/gloves during summer months, as they are not required for warmth. For children under 12yrs, we do recommend wearing some soft-rubber/neoprene rock-pooling shoes/boots (widely available from local shops), for protection against weever fish.
  • Can I use my own equipment?
You can certainly use your own equipment, as long as they are suitable for the conditions at hand. We do recommends a full length wetsuit for your comfort and warmth (2hr lessons), particularly in the case of children. As for hard surfboards, we may need to assess you on one of our soft surfboards beforehand but you are welcome to bring your own to use.
  • What do I need to bring with me?
You'll only need a towel and 'slim-fitting'/Lycra swimwear to be worn underneath the wetsuit, and perhaps some means of refreshment for after your lesson(s). There are numerous food/drink and catering establishments available, either on the beach or in Perranporth's town, all within a stone's throw from us.
  • Do we need to book in advance, or just show up?
We can usually cater for lessons on a 'walk-in' basis; however, advanced booking (min. 24hrs) is highly recommended during the peak summer (Jul/Aug) period, particularly if you are booking as a family/group/private for a specific day/time, as we do tend to get busy. You can also see our session availability live on our booking platform.
  • How long are the lessons?
All our lessons are a full 2-hrs long. We do not consider changing into wetsuits & pre/post-lesson briefings as part of your practical lesson, but please allow 3 hours between arrival and departure.
  • Is there parking nearby?
Yes, the main beach promenade carpark overlooks us and is the main access to the beach. There are several other car parks about the town, all within few minutes walk of us or the beach.
  • Will there be somewhere to store my personal belongings?
Yes, we will look after your belongings for you whilst you are in the water. We will issue you with a large storage box to keep your belongings secure and dry.
  • Are there showers?
Yes, hot showers are available in the ablutions on the beach promenade, less than 100m from our base. There is a usage charge for these showers for an allotted time, just so you know. There are free public beach showers available at the Watering Hole bar on the beach.
